Orthopaedic CME – Hawkes Bay

We invite General Practitioners to register for our Orthopaedic Update CME being held in June 2024, out of Royston Hospital.  Presentation details are still to be confirmed; however, the days sessions will be held by Mr. Sanka Bambarawana, Mr. Angus Wickham, Mr. James Blackett, Mr. Alex Carslaw, Mr. Stephen Andrews and Mr. Simon Johnson.

8.30am – Registrations

9.00am – 3pm – Presentations

  • Sanka Bambarawana – Arthritis of the foot and ankle
    • Discuss the presentations of common foot and ankle arthritic conditions
    • Discuss the initial treatment of these conditions and when to refer.
  • Stephen Andrews – Rotator cuff tear
    • Primary care assessment and when to refer
  • James Blackett – Mechanical back pain, when to refer
    • Become familiar with the Canadian Back Institute patterns of back and leg pain
    • Be able to interpret pain patterns to guide when specialist referral is required
    • An update on the status of spine care in the Hawkes Bay
  • Alex Carslaw – Disc Prolapse – cervical and lumbar
    • Identify symptoms and signs of lumbar radiculopathy and the differential diagnoses
    • Undertake initial management of patients with these conditions and identify those warranting further referral to specialist service
    • Be aware of surgical and non-surgical treatments for these conditions
  • Angus Wickham – ACC pathways
  • Simon Johnson – The acute shoulder
  • Ciaran Thrush – The acute knee
    • How to investigate acute knee injuries
    • Which knee injuries need urgent referral

Morning tea and lunch are provided.
